Jatigede hydropower plant ready to increase Java-Bali electricity supply with 2×55 MW capacity

Jakarta – PT PLN (Persero) is ready to operate the Jatigede hydroelectric power plant (PLTA) in Sumedang Regency, West Java, which has a total capacity of 2×55 Megawatts (MW). The two units will soon be handed over to the operator, PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP), to contribute to the Java-Bali region’s electricity supply.

Achmad Ismail, the General Manager of the Central Java Development Unit 2 (PLN UIP JBT 2), explained that PLN’s success in completing both units at once exceeded the initial target.

“Initially, we targeted one unit to be ready to operate this year, but Alhamdulillah, we can complete both units so that they are ready to operate simultaneously,” Ismail said in an official statement on Wednesday, September 4.

Jatigede hydropower plant is an important part of PLN’s strategy to support the increase of the renewable energy (NRE) mix in Indonesia. Although electricity prices are being calculated, the energy produced by this PLTA has begun to flow into the Central Java electricity system.

Meanwhile, the PLN UPP JBT 2 manager, Husni Wardana, explained that the Jatigede hydropower plant was built by utilising water from the Jatigede reservoir, initiated by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR).

“We utilise water resources in the Jatigede reservoir to produce 2×55 MW of electrical power,” Husni explained.

The Jatigede hydropower project has reached a crucial phase with the issue of the Certificate of Operation (SLO). It is awaiting administrative completion before it is handed over to the operation manager.

“We have also coordinated with the PUPR Ministry regarding the management of water from the Jatigede dam, which, in addition to irrigation, is also used for electricity generation in this hydropower plant,” Husni added.

Jatigede hydropower plant, with a capacity of 2×55 MW, will supply electricity to the already interconnected Java-Bali electricity system.

“The electricity generated here will be distributed through the transmission network from Rancaekek to Sunyaragi, enabling a stable supply of electricity to various regions in Java and Bali,” Husni said.

With the Jatigede hydroelectric power plant ready for full operation, PLN hopes to contribute to the energy significantly needed in Java-Bali while supporting the target of increasing renewable energy in Indonesia. (Hartatik)
