Changes to the Earth’s climate are unprecedented in thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest report .
The IPCC Working Group I report, Climate Change 2021: the Physical Science Basis, released on Monday (9/8) or about three months before the UNFCCC COP26 in Glasgow, said that climate change can still be limited with strong and sustained reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases (CO2). The report was approved on Friday (6/8) by 195 member governments of the IPCC, through a virtual approval session that was held over two weeks starting on July 26.
“Is it still possible to limit global warming to 1.5 °C? The answer is yes,” Maisa Rojas, a coordinating lead author on the report and director of the University of Chile’s Center for Climate and Resilience Research in Santiago told Nature. “But unless there are immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions of all greenhouse gases, limiting global warming to 1.5 °C will be beyond reach.”
In 2018, the IPCC said in a special report that the world needs to curb increasing temperatures to below 1.5 degrees Celsius, more ambitious than the 2 degrees Celsius agreed previously in the Paris Agreement. The 2018 report said that the science is clear: human-driven global warming is raging at an unprecedented pace and scale and the current report affirms this finding. We only have a decade before we surpass this threshold, risking further destruction, and disruption to lives and ecosystems.
