Jakarta – The Ministry of Industry encourages industrial decarbonisation action by preparing a green industry roadmap, which is expected to achieve the net zero emission (NZE) target by 2050.
This step is taken to significantly reduce these emissions, mostly generated from fossil energy use in the industrial production process and electricity generation. Greenhouse gas emissions from the industrial sector in Indonesia continued to increase from 2011 to 2022, with total emissions in 2022 reaching more than 400 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
The Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry organised a workshop on Thursday, August 8, 2024. The workshop focused on designing a decarbonisation roadmap in industrial sub-sectors such as textiles, ceramics and glass, food and beverages, and transport equipment.
On that occasion, the Head of the Green Industry Center of the Ministry of Industry, Apit Pria Nugraha explained that this roadmap will provide clear guidance for the industry to move towards a more environmentally friendly direction.
“The decarbonisation policy that we are preparing includes a road map for priority sub-sectors, carbon trading regulations, to the management of carbon economic value in the industrial sector,” Apit said.
In addition, Apit also underlined the importance of collaboration between ministries, such as the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, to harmonise data and facilitate industry players in building a sustainable green industry.
IESR Executive Director, Fabby Tumiwa, added that the global trend that encourages energy transition has spurred industrial competition to produce products with a low carbon footprint. “The creation of industries with NZE 2050 targets will not only improve competitiveness but also open up new market opportunities and reduce long-term operational costs,” he said.
Faricha Hidayati, Coordinator of IESR’s Industrial Decarbonisation Program, explained that the implementation of decarbonization in industrial estates can reduce operational emissions by up to 50 per cent.
“Decarbonization will also help secure energy supply and minimise the risk of investment in new technology,” Faricha explained.
IESR hopes that decarbonisation measures taken in the industrial sector can inspire other sectors to set more ambitious NZE targets, even before the government’s 2060 target. (Hartatik)
