JAKARTA – Indonesia launched the first electric car assembled in Indonesia, said Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi in a written statement, Friday (18/3). The mass use of electric vehicles is one of the government’s efforts to encourage and accelerate the transition to the use of new and renewable energy (NRE).

The move is in accordance with Presidential Regulation Number 55 of 2019 concerning the Acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle Program for Road Transportation. Sumadi said, one of the keys for Indonesia to compete in the global electric vehicle industry competition is to create a good ecosystem for the development of electric vehicles.

“The final product is not only a motorcycle or electric car, but also important components or spare parts. So this industry will continue to develop,” he said.

A number of efforts have been made by the government, starting from supporting regulations, increasing research and innovation of electric vehicles, grand designs for developing electric vehicles to downstreaming in the industrial world.

At the same occasion, Chairman of the ITB Alumni Association Gembong Primadjaja explained, the transition of energy and electromobility is a necessity that can no longer be postponed. “Not only on the upstream side, namely the power plant, the transition starts from the downstream side, namely transportation,” he said.

He said that the global security crisis triggered by the Russia-Ukraine conflict had caused an increase in the price of fuel oil (BBM). This has triggered a number of countries such as Germany to accelerate the transition of energy to NRE. “Currently, energy is not only related to economic and environmental aspects, but also related to the defense and security of a country,” he explained.

He said that a number of developed countries had targeted that by 2030 all vehicles would be based on Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). To speed things up, the government has issued a number of incentives, such as providing subsidies for buying BEVs, zero road taxes, zero registration taxes for zero emission cars, and giving special discounts for companies that buy BEVs. He said Indonesia needed to make efforts to accelerate the energy transition to NRE.

“Support from the generation side provided by PLN is an important driver and capital for accelerating the growth of the electromobility ecosystem, because later it is hoped that there will be no more obstacles on the electricity supply side,” he said. (Hartatik)
