Indonesia, Singapore sign environmental cooperation to strengthen regional climate action

Jakarta — Indonesia and Singapore have signed a bilateral environmental cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening collaboration on climate action, pollution control, and the transition toward a green economy in Southeast Asia.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday, June 29, at the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) office in Jakarta by Indonesian Environment Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat and Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu.

The agreement covers a broad range of environmental issues, including climate change, waste management, circular economy development, air and water quality, and transboundary pollution control.

Jumhur said the MoU serves as a framework for more concrete cooperation between the two countries, including joint efforts to address prolonged El Niño impacts and other environmental challenges.

“This MoU is an umbrella for future operational cooperation, including climate change, waste management, air pollution, and strategies to deal with prolonged El Niño,” Jumhur said.

Grace Fu said the partnership opens opportunities for deeper collaboration in key environmental sectors, including circular economy initiatives and cross-border pollution management.

Both countries also agreed to strengthen technical exchanges, launch joint research, develop pilot sustainability projects, and facilitate technology transfer to accelerate environmental innovation.

The partnership aligns with commitments under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, while supporting Indonesia’s 2025–2029 national development plan.

As part of the next steps, Indonesia and Singapore will hold regular ministerial policy dialogues and establish a senior officials’ working group to monitor implementation and identify new areas for cooperation. (nsh)
