Jakarta – The 2×660 MW South Sumatra 8 (Sumsel-8) Mine Mouth Power Plant (PLTU) reached Commercial Operation Date (COD) status, marking the plant’s operation, according to officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in early November. The power plant is cooperated by PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) and China Huadian Hong Kong Company Ltd (CHDHK).
The Sumsel-8 power plant is located in Tanjung Lalang Village, Tanjung Agung District, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra Province, and is part of the national programme of 35,000 MW Power Plant Development.
Director General of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Jisman Hutajulu, stated the importance of the Sumsel-8 power plant in maintaining electricity in Sumatra, which continues to increase.
“Electricity demand in Sumatra continues to increase. Thus, the Sumsel-8 power plant has an important role in fulfilling this increasing need,” he said in a written statement.
Arsal Ismail, President Director of PTBA, said that the Tanjung Lalang power plant uses supercritical technology that is efficient and environmentally friendly by applying Flue Gas Desulfurisation (FGD) technology to reduce exhaust emissions, especially sulfur dioxide.
He said that the Sumsel-8 power plant “will supply electricity to PLN for the public interest in the Sumatra electricity system and will consume around 5.4 million tonnes of coal annually. Investment in this project reaches USD 1.68 billion”. (Hartatik)
