Jakarta – The government admits that all targets for the use of new renewable energy (NRE) set out in the National Energy Policy (KEN) have not been achieved.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif in a meeting with Commission VII of the House of Representatives, quoted from the ministry’s website, Tuesday, July 9, said that the government now feels the need to revise Government Regulation (PP) No. 79/2014 on the National Energy Policy.
“This is due to the fact that the economic growth target and the target of energy supply and utilization in the PP-KEN have not been achieved, which is mainly influenced by significant changes in the strategic environment both nationally and globally,” he said.
In the macroeconomic assumptions, the national growth target for the 2019-2023 period is projected at 7-8 per cent. However, the average realisation of growth was only around 5 per cent in the 2015-2018 period, with anomalies due to the global economic crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic causing negative growth reaching minus 2 per cent in 2020.
“In line with this stage, the achievement of energy supply and utilisation targets in PP-KEN during 2015 and 2023 has also experienced a gap of around 3 per cent to 4 per cent per year,” Arifin added.
What is most concerning is the realisation of the use of renewable energy, which is very far from the target. “Especially in 2023, the realisation of the NRE mix achievement was recorded at 13.1 per cent of the target of 17.87 per cent,” Arifin explained.
The target of NRE utilisation in KEN, which is set to reach 23 per cent by 2025, has certainly failed miserably because, until the end of this year, the realisation has only reached slightly more than 50 per cent of the target that has to be met within two years.
With this condition, the government emphasises the importance of evaluating and revising existing regulations to adjust to the current situation and ensure that renewable energy targets can be achieved in the future. (Hartatik)
