PLN records a 229% surge in electricity consumption from 1,582 charging stations across Indonesia

Jakarta – PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said that electricity consumption has increased along with the state electricity company’s infrastructure expansion of the network of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU). Electricity consumption has reached 229%, from 741.8 MWh in the first semester of 2023 to 2,438.8 MWh in the first semester of 2024.

Prasodjo said “In total, we have operated 1,582 SPKLUs in 1,131 locations, an increase of 157% compared to the first semester of last year which was only 616 SPKLUs,” Darmawan said in his statement, Friday, August 2.

As of the first semester of 2024, PLN has operated 1,582 SPKLUs, 2,182 Public Electric Vehicle Battery Exchange Stations (SPBKLU), 9,956 Public Electric Charging Stations (SPLU), and 14,524 Home Charging services.

“With the massive growth of electric vehicles, supporting infrastructure must also be available. We are very open to collaborating with various partners regarding the acceleration of energy transition in the transportation sector,” he added.

For home charging services, PLN has collaborated with various electric car sole brand holders (ATPM) and operates the PLN Mobile application, which makes it easier for electric vehicle customers to get home charging services.

Until the first semester of 2024, the number of home-charging customers reached 14,524, an increase of 335% compared to the first semester last year. Home charging electricity consumption also increased 344%, from 960.1 MWh to 4,264.8 MWh.

PLN is developing charging station infrastructure for electric buses and public transportation. PLN and partners have also prepared 2,200 SPBKLU for electric motorcycles until June 2024. “We are committed to continuing to add battery swapping infrastructure for two-wheeled electric vehicles, considering that two-wheeled EV users continue to increase and become the main mode of transportation in Indonesia,” Prasodjo explained.

PLN has also built 9,956 SPLUs spread throughout Indonesia, and introduced SPKLU Poles with a total of 2,000 units, utilising electric poles as SPKLU media. (Hartatik)
