PLN offers investment in conversion technology from fossil fuels

Jakarta – State electricity company, PT PLN (Persero) sets out to convert their diesel power plant into a new renewable energy (NRE)-based power plant of 600 megawatts (MW), officials said Tuesday (26/4). For this reason, PLN opens wide opportunities for partners with proven and inexpensive technology to replace the PLTD.

The conversion of conventional power plants to reduce carbon emissions will affect electricity prices. In the future, PLN will unlock all battery technology as a backup power.

“We invite all potential partners to participate. This competition is aimed to drive cheaper prices of clean energy,” said PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, in a written statement.

He said efforts to reduce carbon emissions is still a dilemma, because it affects the price of electricity. However, over time, the price of clean energy generation will be more affordable.

“We really understand the dilemma … cheap electricity prices are still based on dirty energy. But over time, clean energy-based plants are getting cheaper and this is a strong basis for us to make changes,” said Prasodjo.

He is optimistic that these efforts can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, reduce emissions, increase the portion of NRE in the energy mix, and increase energy security because it uses domestic energy which is the potential of the Indonesian state.

“PLN is the main state-owned company in reducing emissions. If PLN does not make efforts to reduce emissions, then in 2060 the electricity sector could contribute 920 million carbon emissions,” said Prasodjo. (Hartatik)
