Non-stop rain, 52-degree heat could happen if we fail to tackle climate crisis: study

Jakarta – A group of researchers at the University of Tokyo revealed the results of their research if the world failed to tackle global warming, Asahi Shimbun reports, Monday (15/8).

Taichi Sano, a doctoral candidate in the engineering graduate school and a key researcher said that failure to tackle global warming could result in a third of the world’s population facing temperatures exceeding 52 degrees Celsius and daily rainfall levels of 300 millimetres by the end of the century.

“The research results show that measures to deal with climate change based on past experience will be insufficient and that there is a need for even further reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and greater international support and cooperation,” Sano said.

The research was aimed at analysing changes that may occur over the course of this century with regard to the possibility of climatic disasters on a scale that occur once every two decades due to global warming. The results are expected to be published soon in a journal at Britain’s Institute of Physics.

In the business-as-usual scenario, the researchers projected that 2.52 billion people, or 34 percent of the world’s population, will be at risk from unimaginably high temperatures and relentless heavy rainfall.

The research also shows that even if the original goal set out in the Paris Agreement on climate change was to keep the average global temperature increase below 2 degrees from pre-Industrial Revolution levels, about 1.1 billion people, or 16 percent of the total, would still will face similar climate risks by the end of the century.

The areas that will be affected are densely populated areas, such as South Asia and the Sahel region of Africa, which have seen the devastating effects of global warming.

If no more efforts are made to address this problem, the impact will only get worse. Where those who live in affected areas will face tremendous difficulties to cope with the effects of global warming. (Hartatik)
