Latest turbine technology improves efficiency, reduces emissions PLTGU Tambak Lorok Block 3

Semarang—In an effort to support Indonesia’s clean energy transition, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) has inaugurated the operation of the Tambak Lorok Block 3 Steam Gas Power Plant (PLTGU), which has a capacity of 779 MW. This power plant adopts the latest technology to increase energy efficiency by 64 percent, generating more electricity with lower fuel consumption while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Director General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jisman P Hutajulu, revealed that this project is an achievement in energy infrastructure and a concrete step in supporting the national energy transition agenda.

“PLTGU Tambak Lorok Block 3 adopts the latest gas turbine technology from General Electric (GE) in collaboration with national contractors Hutama Karya and Marubeni Corporation. This is a tangible manifestation of global and national collaboration in realizing an efficient and environmentally friendly power plant,” Jisman explained at the inauguration in Semarang, Central Java, Friday, August 30.

The power plant, located near Tanjung Mas Port, is designed to operate as a fast response, or peaker, plant that can be activated quickly to meet spikes in electricity demand during peak load times. This makes it an important element in maintaining the stability of the electricity supply in Central Java and surrounding areas.

Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PT PLN (Persero), emphasized the importance of electricity system reliability in supporting the transition to new renewable energy.

“The biggest challenge in the energy transition is integrating large-scale renewable energy into the PLN system. With a fast-responding PLTGU like Tambak Lorok Blok 3, the electricity system’s reliability in Central Java will increase significantly while opening up more space for renewable energy integration,” Darmawan said.

PLTGU Tambak Lorok Blok 3 also records competitive cost of production (BPP) efficiency, around 11.45%. In addition to being efficient in energy production, the plant is designed to meet strict emission standards following the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (LHK) regulations. The technology can reduce emissions to very low levels, making it one of its class’s most environmentally friendly power plants.

With its technological and efficiency advantages, PLTGU Tambak Lorok Blok 3 is expected to play a strategic role in ensuring a stable and sustainable electricity supply in Indonesia and supporting the accelerated transition to clean energy. (Hartatik)
