Jakarta – To mitigate the impacts of climate change through education, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (MoEC) announced on Friday, October 11, a strategic move to integrate climate change materials into the curriculum at all levels of education.
Yogi Anggraena, Head of the Curriculum Team at the Ministry’s Center for Curriculum and Learning (Puskurjar), explained that the new guidelines will cover various phases of education, from early childhood education (PAUD), elementary school (SD), junior high school (SMP), to senior high school (SMA).
“In the early stages of preparation, we did map out what abilities students need to have starting from the foundation phase in PAUD, elementary school, junior high school, and high school. Now, after we compile what abilities need to be possessed, we map them into intracurricular, into co-curricular, and extracurricular,” said Yogi in the Merdeka Belajar Gathering Webinar episode “Moving Together for Climate Change Education in the Independent Curriculum”, October 10.
MoEF appreciation and support
Luckmi Purwandari, Head of the Center for Environment and Forestry Generation Development, Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), appreciated the Ministry’s move. According to Luckmi, the effort is important to help the younger generation understand and respond to environmental threats, such as the biodiversity crisis, pollution, and climate change.
“Currently, there are three environmental crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and waste and garbage pollution. These three crises are interrelated. Therefore, MoEF encourages the movement of environmental care and culture in schools. These activities are one of the goals of dealing with the three crises,” she explained.
Luckmi added that teaching about climate change that is applied according to the local context is expected to broaden students’ horizons about environmental issues around them and encourage students to play an active role in protecting the environment. (Hartatik)
