A comprehensive report outlining China’s energy transition outlook was unveiled on the sidelines of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, People’s Daily Online reported. Titled “China Energy Transformation Outlook 2023,” the report was launched during a side event themed “Jointly Shaping a Resolute Future for Global Energy Transformation.”
The event highlighted China’s commitment to addressing critical aspects of energy security and cost-effectiveness during the transition process. At the event, China’s special envoy for climate change, Xie Zhenhua, emphasised the importance of countries exploring energy transition solutions tailored to their unique conditions. He stressed the need for an inclusive, pragmatic, and feasible consensus for all nations involved in the global effort to combat climate change.
Xie Zhenhua expressed optimism that gathering experts at the event would yield innovative solutions to everyday challenges, fostering global cooperation and strength to advance green and low-carbon transitions worldwide.
The report outlines China’s commitment to pursuing a green and low-carbon path distinct from that of developed countries. It envisions a leap-forward development in clean energy technologies, propelling the nation toward high-quality economic and social development. China aims to achieve this while maintaining relatively low per-capita energy consumption and carbon emissions compared to developed counterparts, instilling confidence in global green growth.
Mary Warlick, deputy executive director of the International Energy Agency, commended China as a major contributor to accelerating the expansion of the clean energy economy. She highlighted the opportunity for developed economies and China to jointly lead global climate action by intensifying efforts on energy transition. She asserted that the collaboration between these entities has the potential to drive progress on a global scale, marking a crucial step forward in the fight against climate change. (nsh)
