BMKG warns South Central Java of potential tidal floods until May 11, 2023

Semarang – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of the potential for tidal flooding in the southern region of Central Java from May 5 to 11, 2023. BMKG said that the phenomenon of the full moon phase on May 5, 2023, has the potential to increase the maximum sea tide height.

Rendi Krisnawan, a BMKG forecaster at Tunggul Wulung Meteorological Station in Cilacap, said that based on water level data and tide predictions, coastal flooding or tidal flooding has the potential to occur in several coastal areas in Indonesia.

“Tidal flood conditions can take place on May 5-11, 2023 on the southern coast of Central Java to Yogyakarta,” he said.

Some areas with the potential for tidal floods include the southern coast of Cilacap, the southern coast of Kebumen, the southern coast of Purworejo, and the southern coast of Yogyakarta. Rendi explained that the most significant potential for tidal flooding occurred between May 7-10, 2023. This refers to the tidal forecast between May 5-11, 2023.

“The height of the rising tide is estimated to reach 2.1 to 2.2 meters,” said Krisnawan.

Then for the height of sea waves in the southern waters of Central Java and Yogyakarta between 1.25 to 3 meters or ‘high’ category.

“The height of these sea waves can trigger the potential for tidal flooding,” he said, adding that tidal floods can have an impact on community activities around ports and coastal areas.

These activities include loading and unloading at the port, activities in coastal settlements, as well as salt ponds and inland fisheries. Rice farmers in swampy areas, known as ceblok, are also urged to anticipate the impact of the potential tidal floods.

More broadly, he appealed to the public to always be vigilant and alert, to anticipate the impact of the maximum tide. The public is also encouraged to pay attention to updated maritime weather information from BMKG. (Hartatik)
