Jakarta – The Tanjung Mas Port area of Semarang is again inundated with water up to a height of 80cm, according to Antaranews.com, Tuesday (21/6). Previously, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had issued an early warning of the potential threat of tidal flooding that occurred in 19 coastal areas throughout Indonesia. The tidal flood (rob) has the potential to occur between June 11 and 23.
Head of BMKG Maritime Meteorology Center, Eko Prasetyo, said that the potential for tidal flooding in the 19 areas has now entered the phase of the highest level which causes an increase in tidal heights. Simultaneously, in Indonesia a super full moon phenomenon or a full moon phase on June 14, 2022, that increases the potential of tidal flooding in some coastal areas.
“Based on altimetry satellite imagery, sea level shows a positive anomaly that has the potential to cause higher coastal flooding,” said Prasetyo in a press release, Monday (13/6).
He said, consistent winds blowing at high enough speeds of up to 46 km per hour in several waters in Indonesia resulted in an increase in wave height. Especially in the Java Sea, Sawu Sea, Flores Sea, Banda Sea with a wave height of up to 2 meters, and in the western waters of Sumatra, southern waters of Java to NTT, the Arafuru Sea with a wave height of up to 3 meters.
The potential for coastal flooding is different in time (days and hours) in each region. Even so, the potential for tidal flooding in several parts of Indonesia is certain to disrupt the daily activities of the community, especially around ports and coasts. These include loading and unloading activities at ports, activities in coastal settlements as well as salt farming and inland fishing activities.
“We urge the public to be alert and ready to anticipate the impact of the rob this time,” he said. (Hartatik)
