Barito Renewables begins geothermal exploration in North Maluku

Jakarta — PT Star Energy Geothermal Indonesia (SEGI), a subsidiary of PT Barito Renewables Energy Tbk (IDX: BREN), has started drilling its first exploration well in Hamiding, North Halmahera, North Maluku, the company said in a press statement on Monday, October 20. The activity, part of a government-assigned Preliminary Survey and Exploration (PSPE) program granted in 2018, marks a major step toward expanding geothermal development in eastern Indonesia.

Hamiding is estimated to hold geothermal resources with a potential capacity of 275–550 MW, with the first phase targeting 50 MW out of a planned 300 MW total installed capacity. The exploration aims to confirm the existence of geothermal reservoirs that can later be developed into power generation units, supporting Indonesia’s clean energy transition.

The drilling will employ a 1,500 HP Drilling Rig 253, built to handle complex geological formations. The operation emphasises strict safety, environmental protection, and community empowerment standards, the company said.

Barito Renewables CEO Hendra Soetjipto Tan said the milestone represents “part of our journey to deliver clean energy for Indonesia,” highlighting ongoing contributions from SEGI’s geothermal fields in Salak, Darajat, and Wayang Windu. He also expressed appreciation for the support from government partners and local communities.

The project is also expected to generate local benefits, including job creation, MSME participation, and workforce training opportunities, further boosting North Halmahera’s regional economy. (nsh)
