Jakarta – PT Pertamina Power Indonesia (PPI), the New and Renewable Energy Subholding of PT Pertamina (Persero) is focusing on the ammonia business. The feasibility study stage for business development in three geothermal working areas (WK) is being carried out simultaneously in the Sulawesi region.
Green ammonia is produced from non-hydrocarbon feedstocks and also uses energy sources from non-hydrocarbons (green energy). One of the production processes of green ammonia is to react hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water with nitrogen taken from the air.
Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development of PT Pertamina Power Indonesia, Fadli Rahman said, one of PPI’s subsidiaries, Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), is managing more than enough geothermal reserves to be developed not only into hot steam for electricity but also green ammonia. Green ammonia itself is believed to be a commodity that will be very valuable in the future.
“There are three plans, namely Lahendong, Tompaso, and Kotamobagu. Feasibility study (will be conducted) until next year,” Fadli said on the sidelines of the Green Economic Forum.
Furthermore, according to him, PPI targets PGE to be able to produce green ammonia before 2030. According to Fadli, the green ammonia market is also potentially good, and Pertamina already has a clear export destination if this commodity cannot be absorbed for domestic needs.
Japan will be the main destination for Pertamina’s green ammonia exports. Japan is predicted to require around 30 million tons of green ammonia per year. (Hartatik)
