Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated eight Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) projects held centrally at the Ijen Unit 1 PLTP, East Java, on Thursday, 26 June. The total combined capacity of the projects reaches 351.9 Megawatts (MW) and is estimated to be able to electrify up to 390,000 households across Indonesia.

These projects attracted an investment of IDR 23.34 trillion and created 8,761 jobs, marking them as one of the key milestones in national renewable energy development.

“A country that wants to stand tall must control its own energy sources. God gives us the gift of renewable energy. Now is the time for us to manage it well and responsibly,” Prabowo said in front of officials, industry players and local communities attending the event.

Towards zero emissions

The President called the operation of this PLTP a concrete step towards the net-zero carbon emission target sooner than scheduled. According to him, the development of the energy sector should no longer rely solely on fossil fuels.

“Energy self-sufficiency will be the foundation of Indonesia becoming a great nation. This is not just about electricity, it is about sovereignty,” he said.

Minister of Investment and Head of BKPM Bahlil Lahadalia, who also accompanied the President, added that geothermal energy has been proven not only to provide clean energy but also to make significant fiscal contributions.

“In terms of state revenue, geothermal contributes PNBP of around Rp426.5 billion per year. We also encourage the domestic industry through the domestic component level (TKDN), which reaches 40 per cent,” Bahlil said.

One of the flagship projects in this inauguration is the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant Unit 1, developed by PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal. With a capacity of 34.5 MW, this unit began supplying electricity to the Java-Bali system in February. The project infrastructure is equipped with 83 transmission towers and a 150 kV network, and is targeted to reach around 85,000 households.

“PLTP Ijen will continue to be developed. Phase II will add 45 MW, and Phase III 25 MW, so that the total can reach 110 MW,” said Bahlil when explaining the project expansion plan.

The following is a list of PLTP projects that were inaugurated, where 3 PLTPs that have a commercial operation date (COD) or have been operating include PLTP Ijen Unit 1 (34.5 MW) – PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal, PLTP Salak Binary (16.15 MW) – Star Energy Geothermal Salak, and PLTP Sorik Marapi Unit 5 (41.25 MW) – PT Sorik Marapi Geothermal.

Meanwhile, five other projects are in the groundbreaking stage, including Ulubelu Extension Gunung Tiga PLTP (55 MW) – PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk, Muara Laboh PLTP Unit 2 (88 MW) – PT Supreme Energy Muara Laboh, Salak PLTP Unit 7 (40 MW) – Star Energy Geothermal Salak, Wayang Windu PLTP Unit 3 – Star Energy Geothermal Wayang Windu, Patuha PLTP Unit 2 – PT Geo Dipa Energy (Persero).

In addition to PLTP, President Prabowo also inaugurated the construction and operation of 47 units of Solar Power Plant (PLTS) with a total capacity of 27.8 MW. The project is expected to electrify 47,383 households and enhance the national energy mix with an increasingly significant contribution from renewable energy sources. (Hartatik)
