PLTGU Jawa-1, first integrated LNG to power in Asia in operation

Jakarta – Jawa-1, also known as the PLTGU Jawa-1 project, is a 1,760MW liquefied natural gas (LNG)-based power project in Cilamaya, West Java province, Java Island, Indonesia. The plant, integrated with Jawa Satu Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) with a capacity of 170,000 m3 has successfully carried out a ship-to-ship loading of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) in Cilamaya, West Java.

LNG carriers EKAPUTRA 1 and TRIPUTRA owned by PT GTS Internasional Tbk (GTSI), with respective capacities of 137,000 m3 and 21,500 m3, transport LNG from the Jawa Satu FSRU to various areas in Indonesia. Gas supply of PLTGU Jawa-1 originates from LNG ex Tangguh Papua which is regasified at the Jawa Satu FSRU.

In a written release, Monday (18/4), Director of Primary Energy PT PLN Hartanto Wibowo said the Jawa-1 PLTGU operated by PT Jawa Satu Power, a subsidiary of PT Pertamina Power Indonesia (PPI) will be made a national vital object for its strategic importance to the economy. State electricity company (PLN) will supply its largest electricity grid in Java, Madura and Bali from PLTGU Jawa-1.

The ‘LNG-to-power’ power plant is considered to be one of the biggest gas-fired plants in south-east Asia and the first of its kind in Asia to be integrated with an FSRU in a single project will start operating or commercial operating date (COD), this semester. The integration of the FSRU with the Jawa-1 PLTGU generating unit makes it the largest integrated PLTGU in Southeast Asia by having 2 power block units.

“The Jawa-1 PLTGU has successfully supplied gas to the Jawa-1 PLTGU Power Plant and achieved the first firing milestone on February 23, 2022,” Wibowo said, referring to the initial ignition of the power block unit.

He said the Jawa-1 PLTGU is very important in the energy transition process, as gas is an environmentally friendly energy and the main bridge to realising the national renewable energy mix target in primary energy mix to reach at least 23% by 2025.

Jawa-1 PLTGU uses the latest generation of single shaft combined cycle gas turbine technology which provides high thermal efficiency reaching the range of 60-65 percent and generates electricity to be supplied to PLN via a 500 KV transmission line to the PLN Substation in Cibatu Baru/Sukatani, Bekasi.

All staffing and maintenance of the Jawa Satu FSRU is carried out by Indonesian nationals and managed by PT Humolco LNG Indonesia, a subsidiary of GTSI. Crew members are employed by PT MCS Internasional, another subsidiary under PT Humpuss Intermoda Transport Tbk, and a member of the PT Jawa Satu Regas consortium. (Hartatik)
