Jakarta – The State Electricity Company (PLN) collaborates with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and other organisations to accelerate carbon neutral targets and energy transition at the Energy Transition Working Group (ETWG) Forum of the G20 Indonesia Presidency, the company said in a written statement, Wednesday (6/4).
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said that in achieving the carbon neutral target by 2060, PLN needs to take fast and massive steps. In operating the clean energy project, PLN as a global company also needs to meet sustainable social and environmental standards in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“We collaborate with WWF to be able to develop environmental and social standards for renewable energy infrastructure projects that are in line with the principles of sustainable development,” said Prasodjo.
In realising the carbon neutral target, Darmawan said PLN had issued a Green Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). In the company’s green business plan, the portion of renewable energy-based power generation in 2030 is targeted to reach 29 gigawatts (GW). To achieve this target, PLN will add new and renewable energy (NRE) plants of up to 20.9 GW and also support industries in Green Industrial Estates through green power plants.
According to him, this collaboration with WWF can strengthen the management system and policies on social environmental protection at PLN so that environmental and social impacts can be avoided, minimised, and mitigated. He also hopes that through this collaboration, the construction of renewable energy plants at PLN will run optimally according to the RUPTL target, while at the same time preserving the environment and ensuring the welfare of the surrounding community.
“The existence of internationally credible environmental and social protection devices and systems will also increase investor confidence that in turn can attract financing, especially green investment, to accelerate the development of new and renewable energy,” said Prasodjo, adding that this year PLN will increase the installed capacity of renewable energy plants by 228 MW.
WWF Chief Operating Officer Lukas Adhyakso explained that the WWF Indonesia Foundation together with PLN will develop a capacity building program, study, and formulate policy recommendations on the implementation of environmental and social safeguards in renewable energy infrastructure projects, especially regarding biodiversity. Environmental and social protection tools will be compiled and developed based on best management practices, and are expected to support and become a reference in the development of renewable energy at PLN.
