Over-supply, PLN feels burdened

Jakarta – The supply or power excess in almost all electricity systems in Indonesia has made PT PLN (Persero) feel burdened. This is because until 2026, more power plants will enter the PLN system.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo revealed that the national electricity system is oversupplied, especially in the interconnection of Kalimantan 57%, Lombok 37%, Java Bali around 44%, Nias 89%, North Sulawesi and Gorontalo 47%, Ternate 58%.

“Oversupply is a definition where one system’s reliability becomes very high because the electricity supply is quite high redundancy, but the cost also becomes even higher. The ideal condition is between 24%-35%,” said Prasodjo.

He believes that electricity demand will also grow. However, it is not yet known how much electricity demand will grow in the future. “For this reason, we are trying to catch up with demand. Because once demand is increased, it can keep up with supply,” said Prasodjo.

PLN must be able to maintain the momentum of increased energy demand after the pandemic. This could be a positive trend indeed. In the company’s 2022 data, electricity sales grew 6% or around 274 Tera Watthour (TWh).

“That is 16.1 TWh higher or equivalent to an additional revenue of around IDR 2.2 trillion compared to 2021. This is even higher by around 10.7 TWh compared to our RKAP, which is only around 263 TWh,” said Prasodjo.

PLN also carried out several initiatives to continue to maintain the increasing trend of electricity sales growth, such as captive acquisition and facilitating discount programmes for adding power. In addition, it is also electrifying lifestyle, electrifying agriculture, electrifying marine, and downstream development of industrial estates. (Hartatik)
