MEMR: Indonesia’s renewable energy mix reaches 16%, up 2% from last year

Jakarta – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) said that the government’s efforts to accelerate the transition to clean energy are beginning to show results. MEMR noted that the share of new and renewable energy (NRE) in the national energy mix had reached 16 per cent in the second half of 2025, an increase of two per cent compared to last year.

Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), Eniya Listiani Dewi, at the Indonesia Energy Transition Dialogue 2025 on Monday, October 6, said that this achievement is a positive sign, even though the 23 per cent target has not been achieved.

“This semester, we have achieved 16 per cent renewable energy in the total energy mix. So, the target of 23 per cent has not been achieved yet, but thank God, it has increased by double digits in one year. We still have a lot of work to do to achieve it,” said Eniya.

According to Eniya, the target of 23 per cent renewable energy mix will likely only be achieved in 2029 or 2030, depending on the readiness of infrastructure and national investment. The government, she said, is now focusing on strengthening the realisation of renewable energy projects through national planning documents, including PT PLN (Persero)’s 2025-2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).

“Starting next year, most of the additional power plant capacity will come from renewable energy. In the 2025-2034 RUPTL, there will be an additional capacity of 42.6 gigawatts (GW), 71 per cent of which will come from renewable energy. So the direction is clear, Indonesia is indeed moving towards renewable energy,” he explained.

Meanwhile, President Prabowo Subianto emphasised the government’s commitment to accelerating national energy transformation. In his speech during the presentation of the 2026 Draft State Budget and Financial Note, Prabowo stated that Indonesia aims to have all power plants in the country operate using new and renewable energy sources within the next 10 years.

The president believes that this step is not impossible, even though other countries are only targeting decarbonization of the energy sector by 2060. According to him, the 2026 state budget has been prepared to support this transformation, including strengthening energy security and providing incentives for renewable energy projects. He stated that the government’s fiscal support of Rp402.4 trillion will focus on energy security, subsidies, tax incentives, and the development of new and renewable energy sources. (Hartatik)
