Indonesia pursue cooperation in the energy sector with Azerbaijan

Jakarta – The Indonesian government cooperates with Azerbaijan in the energy sector, including oil and gas and alternative and renewable energy, officials said Monday (7/6). The collaboration is a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed virtually by the Ministers of Energy of the two countries on April 30, 2021.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) through the Directorate General of Oil and Gas as well as Special Task Force For Upstream Oil and Gas (SKK Migas) and the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan facilitated a meeting of oil and gas SOEs of the two countries, namely Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) and SOCAR (BUMN Azerbaijan). In a written statement, the Director General of Oil and Gas, Tutuka Ariadji said, PHE will follow up by conveying the potential for oil and gas fields and specific criteria in more detail, and vice versa the potential for cooperation from the Azerbaijan side.

“We have the full support of the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan and his staff to cooperate as a follow-up to the MoU which has been signed by the Ministers of Energy of Azerbaijan and Indonesia,” said Ariadji.

He said that PHE will communicate directly with Azerbaijani companies, adding that “in the future (Indonesian Ambassador for Azerbaijan Hildi Hamid) will help monitor the progress of the follow-up”.

Ariadji said that he hopes this cooperation can reach a final agreement, considering that Azerbaijan is a strategic country with large oil and gas potential and the ability to develop strong renewable energy.

Indonesia and Azerbaijan held The 1st Indonesia-Azerbaijan Energy Forum on February 1, 2016 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The meeting agreed to increase cooperation in the fields of oil and gas, electricity, EBT, capacity building, and encouraged Pertamina and SOCAR to sign the MoU for B to B cooperation.

In 2019, Pertamina and SOCAR signed an MoU B to B and held a video conference organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Furthermore, in 2022, the two countries plan to hold a Working Group of Oil and Gas. (Hartatik)
