Govt develops solar power to meet electricity needs and the carbon market

Jakarta – The potential for new and renewable energy (EBT) in Indonesia is quite large. Currently, the development of solar power plants (PLTS) targets two markets, namely the electricity market itself and carbon credits, officials said Wednesday (11/5).

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said at the Green Economy Indonesia Summit 2022, that PLTS development in Java, is more rooftop factory-based. The government is also developing a solar power generation outside Java which is now being prepared in the Riau Islands.

“The PLTS in Riau Islands can later be used for the Riau Islands’ own consumption, it can even be exported to other countries,” he said, adding that the potential for new and renewable energy is quite large, namely 442 GigaWatts.

Hartarto said that by developing solar power generation Indonesia can market two products, namely electricity and the carbon market.

Meanwhile, in the transportation sector, he revealed that the government continues to encourage the mandatory biodiesel program that supports energy reduction equivalent to 23.3 million tons of CO2 equivalent. Hartarto hopes that this program can encourage the electric car-based industrial sector. Moreover, the government is preparing its ecosystem, from upstream to downstream.

“The green industry is the main goal during the energy transition and of course this will ultimately provide added value to the economy itself. Besides that, it can also absorb highly skilled workers,” he explained. (Hartatik)
