Nusa Dua, Bali – The Indonesian government encourages the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) to formulate real solutions in dealing with the threat of disasters caused by climate change. The statement was conveyed by the Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko in a written statement, Tuesday (24/5).
Climate change not only threatens environmental aspects, but also endangers the defense and security of a country, both domestically and internationally. Currently, conditions in the Asia Pacific are increasingly worrying following the decline in the Disaster Preparedness scores of countries in the region, including Indonesia. This means that these countries are increasingly vulnerable to potential natural disasters.
“The concept of national security is not only about maintaining sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also maintaining the safety of humans. Climate change is a clear threat to humanity,” Moeldoko said.
The Government of Indonesia will host the 2022 GPDRR organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in Nusa Dua, Bali from 23 to 28 May 2022.
GPDRR is a global platform for evaluating successes and challenges in disaster risk reduction. This forum is also useful for accelerating progress towards disaster resilience and sustainable development.
This year, Indonesia is the host with the theme “From Risk to Resilience: Towards Sustainable Development for All in a COVID-19 Transformed World”. The theme was brought up because Indonesia has proven to be able to rise from a pandemic that has a systemic impact, Moeldoko explained.
Deputy for Systems and Strategy of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Raditya Jati told the media in Nusa Dua, Tuesday, saying that this global meeting would be officially opened by President Joko Widodo and attended by delegates from more than 180 countries. The meeting will also be attended by the Deputy Secretary General of the UN Amina J. Mohammed, President of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid, and other high level officials.
Raditya said that this meeting is expected to encourage more cooperation in the field of disaster risk reduction, and global commitments in sustainable resilience, in accordance with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Reduction 2015-2030. The GPDRR will be attended by 4 thousand offline participants and 2 thousand online participants from 193 countries. (Hartatik/nsh)
