G20 can overcome climate change challenges: Environment and Forestry Minister

Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya gave a speech at the G20 Kick Off event on Environment Deputies Meeting and Climate Sustainability Working Group (EDM-CSWG), Wednesday (2/3).

JAKARTA – Countries that are members of the G20 forum control about 80 percent of the world economy, but at the same time also produce 80 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. “Most of them produce marine plastic litter, but at the same time also hold the strength to answer and overcome these challenges,” said the Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar in her speech at the G20 Kick Off event on Environment Deputies Meeting and Climate Sustainability Working Group (EDM-CSWG), Wednesday (2/3).

She said, the G20 forum is a very important forum for Indonesia to invite the whole world to work hand in hand, support each other to recover, and grow stronger and more sustainable, especially setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The EDM-CSWG agenda is strategic for Indonesia in the G20 Forum to show the world, in environmental management and sustainable climate control, especially because in 2022 Indonesia will become the G20 Presidency. “We show that Indonesia has meaning for the world, especially in the context of Environment and Climate Sustainability,” said Bakar.

The G20 Indonesia presidency this time brought three priority issues in the EDM-CSWG agenda, that is supporting sustainable recovery, increasing land and sea based actions to support environmental protection and climate change control objectives and increasing resource mobilisation to support environmental protection and climate change control objectives.

The three priority issues and main missions of the EDM-CSWG will be discussed and formulated into a collective commitment of the G20 through the adoption of a communiqué through discussion of the substance and elements of the communiqué which will be held in three meetings at the level of deputy/director general of the G20 members in succession starting from Yogyakarta on 21 – 24 March 2022, Jakarta on 19 – 21 June 2022, and in Bali on 29 – 30 August 2022.

In this EDM-CSWG meeting, the Indonesian government will also carry out a mission to strengthen global cooperation to be able to produce agreements and concrete actions on EDM topics. In addition, to support priority issues in the Climate Sustainability Working Group (CSWG), a series of studies have been carried out as a basis for discussion for the preparation of ministerial level communiqué/declarations.
