Jakarta – The Indonesian government hopes that the FoLU (forestry and other land use) sector can be the foundation for the absorption of greenhouse gases (GHG), officials said Wednesday (11/5). The hope is contained in the Minister of Environment and Forestry Decree No. 168 concerning FoLU NetSink 2030 for climate change control dated 24 February 2022.
In the webinar “Green Economy Indonesia Summit 2022: The Future Economy of Indonesia”, Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong said that the decree is an example of a step forward in the FoLU sector. He said this means that the government is serious about carrying out the concept of ‘Indonesia FoLU Net Sink 2030’ as an approach and strategy, where by 2030, the emission absorption level of the FoLU sector is targeted to be balanced or higher than the emission level (net sink).
Meanwhile, after 2030, the FoLU sector is targeted to be able to absorb emissions along with activities to reduce GHG emissions from energy transition or decarbonization activities, as well as exploration activities in other sectors, including the agricultural sector.
“With the commitment of the FoLU sector, which is targeted to reduce nearly 60% of the total national emission reduction target, it is hoped that this can be the foundation or basis for achieving carbon neutrality (net-zero emission) by 2060 or sooner,” he explained.
“President Jokowi has also conveyed Indonesia’s target to achieve Net-Zero Emission by 2060 or as early as possible. The President’s directive to the LHK Ministry is very clear, that we promise that what we can do is not just rhetoric,” Dohong said.
In addition to FoLU, the Government has also prepared an NDC Implementation Strategy in 2017, followed up with the preparation of an NDC Mitigation road map in 2019. In 2021, the government will also convey the progress of NDCs and develop a long-term strategy for low-carbon and climate-resilient development. Resilience 2050 or LTS-LCCR 2050 and has been submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat in July 2021 prior to the implementation of UNFCCC COP 26 in Glasgow in November 2021. This submission is in accordance with Decision 1/CP.21 Article 4 Paragraph 19 of the UNFCCC, which mandates countries that ratify Paris Agreement to develop a long-term climate-resilient low-carbon emission plan (LTS-LCCR).
