Coal mining companies eye green energy

Jakarta – A number of companies in the coal sector are beginning to look into the green energy business, by expanding their portfolio to renewable energy projects. PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk, for example, increased the capacity of Solar PV or solar generation at their Kelanis coal terminal from previously 130 kWp or kilowatt peak to 597 kWp. Meanwhile, in the first quarter of 2022, Solar PV in Kelanis has started producing electricity with an output of 191,875 kWh.

Adaro Power President Director, Dharma Djojonegoro in a written release, Monday (13/6), said that the effort was in line with the government’s efforts to increase power generation from renewable sources and “reduce carbon emissions at the PLTU that is currently operating through co-firing”.

We are actively seeking and expanding our portfolio of renewable energy projects to get a balanced energy mix by continuing to study renewable power projects, such as biomass, wind, and solar panels to diversify their energy mix and support PLN through proposal and tender initiatives.

Furthermore, Head of Corporate Communication Division of Adaro Energy Indonesia, Febriati Nadira added, the co-firing trial of PLTU Makmur Sejahtera Wisesa was carried out in October 2021 using 1,000 kg of waste. She said that it is currently being tested using 5,000 kg of waste and “successfully reducing carbon emissions by 2.4 tonnes of CO2e”.

Another coal mining company, PT Mitrabara Adiperdana Tbk (MBAP) has also entered the green energy business through collaboration with Masdar and forming a joint venture company PT Masdar Mitra Solar Radiance. Mitrabara Adiperdana President Director, Khoirudin, said that in the joint venture with Masdar, they have prepared a roadmap for the development of renewable energy.

“We hope to realise an installed capacity of up to 40 MWp in 2023. We are preparing to invest USD 20 million,” explained Khoirudin.

Another company entering the renewable energy business is PT United Tractors Tbk (UNTR), a construction and mining machinery company. UNTR Corporate Secretary, Sara K Loebis said that currently the company is conducting studies and reviews for a number of other new and renewable energy plants such as Hydroelectric Power Plants (PLTA), floating solar PV, geothermal, wind power plants (PLTB), and waste to energy.

She explained that currently UNTR operates a Mini-hydro Power Plant (PLTM), namely the Kalipelus PLTMH with a capacity of 0.5 MW in Central Java and is building a Besai Kemu PLTM in Lampung with a capacity of 7 MW and will operate in early 2023. Loebis said, in the first quarter of 2022, the company’s energy business has paid off and recorded a contribution of Rp 1.1 billion. (Hartatik)
