Clean water crisis looms, 9.5 billion people threatened with water shortage by 2050

Jakarta – By 2050, an estimated 9.5 billion people will experience a shortage of clean water caused, among other things, by climate change. This was revealed by the Special Staff of the Minister of PUPR for Water Resources, Firdaus Ali.

“Climate change makes the need for infrastructure and access to clean water more urgent,” said Firdaus in a virtual Sustainable Water Finance Workshop.

The impact of climate change is not only on access to clean water but also on sanitation needs and flood management efforts, which are predicted to increase as the population increases.

Firdaus emphasised the importance of innovative solutions and sustainable funding to overcome the clean water crisis. One solution is the establishment of the Global Water Fund (GWF).

On the same occasion, in line with Firdaus, the Secretary General of the Ministry of PUPR, Mohammad Zainal Fatah, encouraged the GWF initiative “to show commitment to all parties” as one of the efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Zainal cited the results of the UN Water Conference meeting last year, which stated that Indonesia would find achieving the SDGs in 2030 challenging if efforts stayed the same. He said that the sustainable development goals 2030 agenda” will not be achieved if we do business as usual”. (Hartatik)
