ICIS and Carbon Minds launch emission data identification technology for chemical and plastics companies

Jakarta – Market intelligence services Independent Commodity Intelligence Services (ICIS) develops green technology, Supplier Carbon Footprints that can help chemical and plastics companies measure, manage and identify opportunities to reduce global supply chain emissions for chemicals and plastics.

In a written statement, Thursday (7/7), ICIS Strategy Director, Alison Jones explained, “This technology was developed with Carbon Minds, a specialist in environmental impact modeling for chemicals and plastics, Supplier Carbon Footprints is ready to detect emissions throughout the supply chain for 71 chemicals and plastics, prompting companies to reduce their carbon footprint.

“This tool provides a direct way to report emissions and identify focus areas more accurately. Emissions vary dramatically from supplier to supplier, region and mill, which is not fully reflected in alternative solutions on the market that calculate emissions by region or country,” said Jones.

Furthermore, according to her, with Supplier Carbon Footprints, companies can clearly see the climate impact of their supply chain and measure and compare suppliers’ carbon footprints accurately, adding that “changing just one supplier can make an immediate and significant difference to Scope 3 emissions.”

As consumers, investors and regulations continue to pressure industry to reduce their environmental impact, companies and institutions are increasingly seeking to understand and reduce their carbon footprint. According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBSCD), chemical companies’ upstream and downstream supply chains account for an average of 81 percent of all industrial emissions, with the single largest contributor usually being the supply of raw materials.

Historically, the poor availability and consistency of primary data, or detailed secondary sources, have made it difficult to assess emissions and set effective reduction targets.

Carbon Minds co-founder and CEO, Arne Kätelhön added, “This technology is a major step forward for chemical companies in managing Scope 3 emissions. Supplier Carbon Footprints provides data covering 71 bulk chemicals and plastics consumed to produce the majority of manufactured goods.

“This will provide information to create a supply chain with a lower climate impact and find the right supplier to achieve its goals. Then companies can use that data to engage existing suppliers and help them implement sustainability initiatives,” said Kätelhön. (Hartatik)
