Jakarta – Half of the planned new and renewable energy (NRE) -based plants planned in the recently approved 2021-2030 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) will be completed in 2030, officials said Wednesday (11/5). The total NRE plants to be built is 20.9 GigaWatt (GW).

“Fifty percent of the total generating capacity (EBT) that we plan to complete by 2030,” said Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ego Syahrial in a virtual seminar titled Green Economy Indonesia Summit 2022: The Future Economy of Indonesia.

Syahrial explained that the development of renewable energy had begun massively in accordance with the energy transition roadmap to carbon neutral planned in COP26. From the supply side, the development of NRE will be dominated by solar energy, followed by geothermal, water, ocean waves, and nuclear in the final stages of 2060. The ministry is also currently developing NRE from hydrogen and solar battery systems.

“At the same time, there will be no new coal-fired power plants, except those that have contracts or are in the construction process. We will retire coal power plants that have been built by 2060, gradually,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the government is currently converting Diesel Power Plants (PLTD) to an NRE generator, from coal to gas. In total there are about 2,300 PLTD spread across Java island and the contribution to the energy mix is expected to reach 11.7 percent.

According to Syahrial, the development of NRE needs to be massive because the use of EBT until the end of 2021 is still low. Currently the plan has only reached 11.7 percent, far from the target set by the government in 2025, which is 23 percent.

Other programs to reach this target include the implementation of a rooftop solar power plant (PLTS) of 3.6 GW. It is expected that its contribution to the energy mix is 0.8 percent.

Until 2023, NRE power plants to be built up to 2025 amounts to 10.6 GW, which includes the application of biofuels of 11.6 million kiloliters per year. If it continues to be consistent until 2025, the use of this biofuel will contribute to the NRE mix by 4 percent.

However, in order for the development of NRE to run well, a number of regulations need to be implemented. “We are in the process of finalising the draft presidential regulation regarding the purchase of NRE. … (such that) the price of EBT can be more competitive to the price of fossil fuels,” added Syahrial.
