Jakarta – The United Nations (UN) will launch an energy action plan to get clean and affordable energy by 2030, said a UN spokesman, Thursday (5/5). The UN predicts that the world will face a climate emergency and net zero emissions by 2050.

UN Secretary-General spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said that the UN Energy Partnership said the plan sets out steps for collective action by 30 entities of the world body and international organisations.

“This plan is to achieve the commitments set out at the High-Level Dialogue meeting last September,” said Dujarric, adding that “clean and affordable energy will be beneficial to address the climate emergency and net zero emissions by 2050.”

He said, this agreement includes providing access to electricity for 500 million people. That includes one billion for cooking, the creation of 30 million jobs in renewable energy and energy efficiency by 2025. This will identify seven work areas ranging from increasing efforts to address energy access gaps, to harnessing the power of data, digitisation and visualisation. In addition, it is useful for strengthening monitoring, tracking, accountability and communication.

Dujarric also announced the establishment of a new Energy Compact Action Network, with the aim to align governments seeking support for achieving their clean energy targets with governments and businesses that have pledged more than USD 600 billion to support these commitments through energy compacts.

This will promote the achievement of a just and inclusive energy transition that aims to ensure that everyone has access to clean and affordable energy in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

This agreement came when the United Nations said that the world is currently experiencing three crises, namely energy, food and finance related to the war in Ukraine. (Hartatik)
