PLN is ready to operate the first hydrogen filling station in Indonesia

Jakarta – PT PLN (Persero) is ready to operate the first hydrogen refuelling station (HRS) in Indonesia in Senayan, Jakarta. The HRS is targeted for completion in February 2024 and will serve all types of hydrogen-based vehicles, from private to public and heavy vehicles.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said that the construction of the HRS is PLN’s commitment to support the development of hydrogen energy as an environmentally friendly alternative.

“Developing this green hydrogen supply chain also strengthens national energy security. This means that we are switching from fuel, mostly based on imports, to green hydrogen, which is produced domestically in the country,” he said in an official statement.

Meanwhile, PLN Indonesia Power President Director Edwin Nugraha Putra said cars with hydrogen energy are more promising than electric cars because they have longer mileage.

“Hydrogen has a system that uses 150 bars, and some use a 700-bar system to fill it instantly. Because one car can hold approximately 5 to 8 kg (of fuel weight), where 1 kg can (be used to) travel 100 km, (a car with a full tank can travel) 800 km. Some of the latest cars can even travel for 1 kg of 120 km,” said Edwin. Hydrogen fuel is stored in high-pressure cylinders between 350 bar (5,000 psi) and 700 bar (10,000 psi).

The construction of the first HRS in Indonesia by PLN is essential in developing hydrogen energy as an environmentally friendly alternative and strengthening national energy security. The HRS will provide a new option for people to use more environmentally friendly vehicles with a longer distance. (Hartatik)
