IESR: Green hydrogen, key to Indonesia’s energy future

Jakarta – The Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) states that developing green hydrogen is vital in building Indonesia’s sustainable energy future. IESR Senior Analyst Farid Wijaya highlighted some of the significant benefits of using green hydrogen revealed in their study.

Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced through water electrolysis using electricity generated from renewable sources. “Green hydrogen not only strengthens national energy security but also supports the acceleration of decarbonisation and a sustainable economy,” he said in a written statement.

Wijaya revealed that the results of the IESR study with the Ministry of Investment/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) have revealed several significant benefits of using green hydrogen. In addition to improving electricity supply and renewable energy equity, green hydrogen is also considered an efficient alternative to fossil fuels.

“Green hydrogen has advantages in terms of energy density, which is equivalent to fuel oil (BBM), but with a much lower environmental impact,” he added.

Wijaya said that green hydrogen production is also environmentally friendly, especially when using the electrolysis method to separate hydrogen from water. This process leaves no trace of greenhouse gas emissions or air pollution.

With 3,686 Gigawatts of renewable energy potential, Indonesia has a large capacity to produce green hydrogen.

“This creates an opportunity for Indonesia to play an important role in maintaining environmental balance and opening new markets in the world industry,” Farid explained.

However, strategic steps are needed to ensure the use of green hydrogen runs smoothly. These include standardisation and certification, supportive regulatory policies, resource access, technology, potential markets, and financial support.

“With a comprehensive approach and the right support, green hydrogen has great potential to become the backbone of sustainable energy in Indonesia’s future,” Farid concluded.

This statement from IESR highlights the importance of focusing on environmentally friendly and sustainable energy solutions in the face of global climate change challenges. (Hartatik)
